“Eat The Bowl Too” Enrichment Dog Treat

Guest recipe and blog by rachel fusaro @rachelfusaro

I call myself a hopeless health romantic when it comes to helping dogs and their humans.  It is my mission to SAVE ALL THE DAMN DOGS by inspiring & empowering pet parents to do more with their dogs, in an effort to keep dogs living longer & out of shelters.

My own dog's health is super important to me, just as important as my own. After all, we want to live a long, healthy life and spend as much time as possible together.

Just like how the health of your gut is crucial to your overall health, your pup’s gut health is crucial too… And just like you, your dog’s delicate gut balance can get easily knocked sideways. In fact, one of the top reasons why pet owners visit the vet are for digestive issues.

Unfortunately, our pups get into everything when we’re not looking… And… Sometimes, even when we are looking!

Speaking of food – Have you checked out the ingredients in your dog’s favorite meals or treats? Trust me, you will be shocked. Many dog foods are filled with artificial flavors and preservatives and frankly, some ingredients I can’t even pronounce!  And if I can’t pronounce it, I don’t eat it…. And neither should my dog!

Here’s the truth: Your dog’s gut is very sensitive and can be damaged by things like:

  • Artificial or highly processed foods
  • Antibiotics and other medications, like NSAIDs and steroids
  • Pesticides – like glyphosate – that linger in soil, water, and air
  • Flea and tick treatments that contain pesticides
  • Environmental toxins, like household cleaners or heavy metals
  • Gut infections
  • Dysbiosis, a condition caused by the overgrowth of harmful bacteria in your dog’s gut

I’m sure you want to avoid any extra vet visits, just like I do. So I try my best to feed my pup as many all natural, gut-loving foods as possible. That’s why I created this “Enrichment Treat.”

If you’re  looking for a healthier way to feed your dog AND give them a boost of mental stimulation, you and your pup will both love this. With this super yummy and healthy treat, your dog can eat their meal, and the "bowl", too!

Remember, dogs need daily mental stimulation just like they need exercise, and by freezing this delicious doggie treat, you are giving your dog a longer lasting and enriching experience.  PLUS, it has the added benefit of Just Pets Probiotic, which will keep your pup’s gut flora healthy and flourishing, no matter what they get into!

“Eat The Bowl Too” Enrichment Dog Treat

Prep time: 5 minutes

Freezer (optional): 2-4 hours

Course: Meal or enrichment treat

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 organic bell pepper
  • Your dogs main food diet (I use Farmers Dog)
  • Pet safe bone broth (Brutus, Solid Gold, Merrick are all good brands)
  • Goat Whip or yogurt (I used Bones and Co. Goat Whip)
  • 2-3 organic strawberries (stems removed) &  a handful of blueberries.
  • 1 capsule of Just Pets probiotic
  • Optional: 1 dental stick if you’d like or a natural chew or rawhide in the middle

Directions:

  1. Cut top off organic bell pepper and remove the seeds to create the “bowl”
  2. Fill the bell pepper to the brim with your dog’s main food, leaving an indentation in the middle. (note: if your pup’s favorite food is kibble, soak it in warm water to turn it into a paste)
  3. Open a capsule of Just Pets Probiotic and pour the powder into the indentation
  4. Pour bone broth into the indentation – Just enough so that the liquid fills to the top of the “bowl”
  5. Add a heaping tablespoon of Goat Whip on top, and spread it so the whip lays flat
  6. Add fruit on top of the Goat Whip (note: you can change this up with your pup’s favorite fruits and veggies, the options are endless)
  7. Optional - Stick 1 dental stick into the food mixture
  8. Optional - Put the “bowl” in the freezer just long enough for the fruit to be hard to the touch (about 2-4 hours)
  9. Give to your pup and get ready for the delicious enrichment bliss

Enjoy!

With Love,
Rachel Fusaro
